Moyoro Kaizuka-kan Museum(Ruins Museum)

Moyoro Shell Mound Museum

The Moyoro Shell Mound is a historical site of the ancient northern peoples who were said to have come from Okhotsk culture between the sixth and eighth century when the city of Nara was flourishing. It is a highly important site because it revealed the mysteries of the Okhotsk culture, not to mention its academic value, owing to its uniqueness of being the only site where signs of housing, graves and shell mounds were evident. For this reason, it was designated as a National Historical Site in 1936. The Moyoro Shell Mound Museum displays many tools and unearthed items used by the Okhotsk Culture people who were marine hunters, the thick mound of accumulated shells, the large cave like housing, and typical graves of the people through life-size georamas for guests to see and experience. Come and learn of the people who lived on the coast 1300 years ago.

Lake Tofutsu Water fowl Wetland Center

Lake Tofutsu Aquatic Birds

Wetland Center

Lake Tofutsu located in the Okhotsk region serves as an important resting area for migrating birds such as the "whooper swan", and was registered under the Ramsar Convention in 2005. The area is also a registered part of the Abashiri Quasi-National Park and Wildlife Protection Area, inside of which wildflowers blossom and over 200 varieties of wild birds can be seen. For this reason, many visit the wetlands that have been wisely used over the years, and where events like smelt fishing are held.
Lake Tofutsu Aquatic Birds and Wetland Center, in accordance with the principles of the Ramsar Convention, serves as a center which connects humans and nature, not only provides information on the various natural environments and living organisms, but introduces its relation to humans as well through exhibitions and footage of the different aspects of Lake Tofutsu. We hope you will take time to visit, and get in touch with the splendor of Lake Tofutsu and its value as an important part of sustaining the lives of humans, rich nature and the wild birds.
